Over the years the firm has developed specialization in the areas of income tax, estate tax, estate administration, business law and real estate law. The firm’s clients are primarily high net worth families, corporate executives, closely held businesses and their owners.
Attorney O’Brien was admitted to the Massachusetts bar in 1994 and has been practicing law since that time. Prior to moving into law, he practiced public accounting as a tax consulting manager with Ernst & Young, LLP, specializing in personal financial consulting. O’Brien developed an expertise in a range of professional services that include individual and corporate financial planning, individual and corporate income tax planning and preparation, and sophisticated estate planning.
While working in the accounting sector, O’Brien was also employed as a Senior Accountant with KPMG Peat Marwick, and with Wolf & Company of Massachusetts, P.C. He provided financial accounting and tax services to a wide range of corporate and individual clients.
Attorney O’Brien earned a Bachelor of Science degree, Cum Laude, from the University of Vermont with a concentration in accounting, and a Juris Doctor degree, Cumma Cum Laude, from Suffolk University Law School.
David Neafus – Consultant
David, over the previous 14 years, has operated his own consulting firm providing executive services, specializing in interim executive management, IPOs, turnarounds, strategic analysis, and mergers and acquisitions.
Previous clients include GlycoFi, where as CFO David helped the company complete its $400 Million acquisition by Merck, Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, Inc. where as Vice President of Finance, David led the company to a successful IPO, Infinity Pharmaceuticals where David served as Vice President Finance and Administration and Millennium Pharmaceuticals where he served as Corporate Controller.
Prior to running his own consulting firm, David was an auditor at KPMG for 4 ½ years. David received his bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Minnesota, and his MBA from Bentley College. He is also a certified public accountant.
Thomas A. Austin – CPA
Tom has provided financial leadership and direction to both public and private corporations for over 22 years.
Currently leading the Global Revenue Assurance practice for EMC Corporation, Tom has developed an expertise in guiding high-technology, sales-driven companies with effective business practices. Prior to joining EMC, Tom was the Chief Financial Officer of Arbor Networks, Inc. where he helped lead the company to a position of market leadership and financial strength through organic growth and acquisition. He has played a significant role in establishing financial foundations for other expansion-oriented companies that include EC Cubed, Inc., BioTransplant, Inc. and American Finance Group.
Throughout his career, Tom has relied on his training and experience from PricewaterhouseCoopers LLC., the F.W. Olin Graduate School at Babson College, and Providence College. \
Douglas A. Rivkin – Skytop Advisors, Investment Advisor
As an industry short fixed-income executive for over 25 years, Mr. Rivkin has applied his product and risk management expertise to provide investors with high quality spread products to meet their investing needs.
Previously, Mr. Rivkin spent thirteen years at Moody’s Investor Service as a Senior Credit Officer. Prior to that he spent twelve years at Fidelity Investments, where he was a Market Manager responsible for the marketing of mutual funds to corporations and insurance companies. Mr. Rivkin served, as mutual fund industry expert on NAIC advisory committees, where he spearheaded the development of the NAIC’s Securities Valuation Office’s money market fund investment guidelines and updated capital reserving requirements.
Mr. Rivkin earned an M.B.A. from Suffolk University in 1991 and a B.S. degree in Management from Ithaca College in 1981. He is a member of the iMoneyNet.com Money Fund Report advisory board.
Patrick Davenport – Sr. VP Corporate & Business Development - TwinStrata
Patrick has a background as Managing Partner of a venture capital fund which invested in companies such as Corvis (Large venture-backed IPO), Light Logic (sold to Intel for $400+ million), Fastchannel (sold to DG Systems) and other successful companies.
He also previously worked as Vice President of Marketing and Business Development for Finova Technology Finance and as a Vice President at GE Capital.
Patrick has an M.S. in Finance from Boston College and an MBA from the Kellogg
School of Management at Northwestern University.
David Stone, Managing Director – Liberty Tree Advisors
David Stone is the Founder and Managing Director of Liberty Tree Advisors, LLC, a consulting and investment banking firm that helps emerging life sciences companies grow.
In addition, he is an independent director and Chairman of Ocient
Pharmaceuticals, a commercial-stage biopharmaceutical company and an independent director of Seahorse Bioscience, a laboratory instrument company. David spent seven years as a Managing Director and Partner at Flagship Ventures, an early-stage venture capital firm focused on creating, financing, and building innovative companies in the Life Science and Technology sectors. A veteran of Wall Street, David followed the Biotechnology sector for nearly ten years at Cowen & Company, where he built a highly regarded research and investment banking practice. David began his career in biotechnology in 1983 as a Project Manager and later Communications Director at Genetics Institute (now part of Wyeth Pharmaceuticals). He earned a B.S. in Microbiology from Colorado State University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
Mark P. Carthy, Managing Partner – Orion Healthcare Equity Partners
Mark Carthy co-founded Orion Healthcare Equity Partners in 2007. Mark has 22 years of operating and investment experience in healthcare companies.
Mark joined Oxford in 2000 and became General Partner in 2001. At Oxford,
Mark was responsible for 13 investments totaling $117 million in committed capital. Before joining Oxford, he was Biotechnology Portfolio Manager at Morningside Ventures where he focused on early stage private equity investments. Previously, he was Chief Business Officer of Cubist Pharmaceuticals, where he in-licensed Cubicin, Cubist’s commercial antibiotic which reached annual sales of $240 million in 2007. Mark was also Senior Director of Business Development at Vertex Pharmaceuticals. He received his B.E. in Chemical Engineering from University College Dublin, Ireland and an M.S. in Chemical Engineering from University of Missouri. He received his MBA from Harvard Business School in 1987. Mark was recently listed on the Forbes 2009 Midas List as one of the leading venture capitalists.
Paul Nechipurenko – General Partner, PNN Capital Management
Paul Nechipurenko has been analyzing and investing in operating companies since 1990.
Between 1996 and 2006, he realized a combined IRR of 39.7% in businesses where he was the lead investor. Paul was an Adjunct Professor of Finance at Suffolk University where he instructed graduate students in the MBA and Master of Science in Finance programs. He received his AB from Harvard College and his MBA from Harvard Business School.
John Hallinan – CFO, Cytel Statistical Software & Services
John Hallinan’s fiscal experience in the life sciences and software industries reflect positions of increasing responsibility across a broad range of strategic and operational disciplines.
Hallinan’s background encompasses venture financings, corporate development, technology licensing, and mergers and acquisitions.
Before joining Cytel, Hallinan most recently served as Chief Financial Officer at Signet Laboratories, a leading supplier of diagnostic assays to the pharmaceutical and biotech industries. Prior to Signet, Hallinan was interim CFO at Cambium Learning, a private equity-backed publishing company that completed two acquisitions during Hallinan’s tenure.
Hallinan was the Chief Financial Officer of AnVil, Inc. a venture-funded silico drug discovery company, where he also led the company’s business development efforts in the healthcare market. At CambridgeSoft Corporation, Hallinan rose to CFO of that leading pharma/bio applications and enterprise solutions supplier. As Animation Technologies’ CFO, Hallinan guided the company’s first and second rounds of venture funding.
He is active within the Massachusetts Biotechnology Council, currently serving on the Economic Development Advisory Group, and as co-chair of the Finance Committee and Entrepreneurs University.
Mr. Hallinan holds a BBA from St. Bonaventure University, is a certified public accountant, and a member of the MIT Venture Mentoring Service.
